Most weather apps draw on the same handful of forecast models. What separates them is what they choose to show first and how honestly they handle uncertainty.
This analysis works through the design decisions behind that, and what they cost the people using the result.
A single number hides the useful information
A forecast of 22 degrees and 40 percent rain compresses a probability distribution into two figures. Whether that 40 percent means a brief shower or an even chance of persistent rain is the thing that changes what you do, and it is usually discarded.
Apps that show an hourly band, a range, or a confidence indicator give back the part that was thrown away, and they are noticeably more useful for planning a day.
Naming the source is a quality signal
Model accuracy varies by region, and no single source is best everywhere. An app that names its source and refresh interval lets you evaluate it; one that does not is asking for trust it has not earned.
Refresh interval matters as much as source. An hourly forecast updated twice a day is a schedule, not a forecast.
What to look for
Track a week of forecasts against what happened. Then check whether the app tells you where its data comes from — that single disclosure predicts most of the rest.
A forecast without confidence is a guess with a typeface
Weather apps present probabilistic output as though it were measurement. A single temperature for 3pm on Thursday is a point estimate drawn from a distribution, and the distribution is the interesting part — but showing one number is cleaner, so almost everyone shows one number.
The apps worth using find a way to express uncertainty without a statistics lesson: a range instead of a value at longer horizons, an explicit confidence indicator, or simply refusing to show hourly detail ten days out. Declining to display something you do not know is a design decision most products are unwilling to make.
Source disclosure is the related question. Most consumer weather apps resell one of a small number of underlying models, and which one is used for your specific region explains far more about accuracy than the interface does. An app that names its source is making itself checkable.

Why this keeps happening
Most of what looks like carelessness here is a resolved trade-off — engagement against clarity, or revenue against restraint. Naming the trade-off makes the pattern predictable rather than baffling, and predictable problems are ones you can plan around when choosing between two products.
