Drive a junction you know well and watch when the instruction arrives. Then miss a turn deliberately and see whether the reroute is announced or simply happens. Those two moments tell you more about a navigation app than any feature comparison.
Attention has a budget, and the map spends it first
A driver has a fixed amount of attention and the road has first claim on it. Everything a navigation app renders — a nearby-restaurant pin, a fuel promotion, a traffic-report prompt — is drawn from the same budget as the next junction. The question is not whether those features are useful but whether they are shown while the car is moving.
The apps that handle this well change what they display based on speed. Stationary, they can afford a dense screen; at fifty kilometres an hour, they should be showing a direction, a distance, and nothing else. When an app renders the same interface at both, the design has been optimised for a screenshot rather than a windscreen.
This also explains why voice quality matters more than it appears to. A clear spoken instruction costs no visual attention at all, which makes it the cheapest information channel available. Apps that under-invest in phrasing and timing push the driver back to the screen for information the voice could have carried.
